What A Pediatric Dentist Can Do For Your Child

When parents think of pediatric dentists, they picture them being typical dentists that are focused on working on kids. While this is true, there are some things that pediatric dentists do that you may not be aware of.

Perform Frenectomies

If your child has a condition where their tongue has extra tissue that is holding it down in their mouth, this can actually be fixed by a pediatric dentist. The procedure to correct this problem is known as a frenectomy, and it can be done in the pediatric dentist's office during a single visit. Not all pediatricians do this procedure in their office, so it is worth asking your pediatric dentist about it if you need a frenectomy performed.

Educate Your Child On Proper Oral Care

A large part of going to a pediatric dentist is education. Your child may not listen to you when it comes to telling them to brush and floss properly, but they'll likely take it more seriously if it comes from their dentist. That's why part of the visit is educating your child about the health of their teeth and taking it as seriously as going to the doctor. A little bit of education when they are young can go a long way.

Install Dental Sealants

Dental sealants can be a great way to prevent cavities in small children. It essentially takes those small grooves in their teeth where food tends to become compacted and makes them shallow. While they won't be 100% protected from getting cavities, their chances of getting them will be significantly reduced. This can help you have peace of mind as a parent if your child is not brushing as well as they could.

Repair Dental Injuries

If your child ever is involved in an accident that causes one of their teeth to become knocked out due to trauma, know that a pediatric dentist will be able to help you with this problem. Even if it is just a baby tooth, they will be able to take the steps necessary to prevent problems with their oral health due to dental injury. For example, a spacer may need to be installed to ensure that the surrounding teeth do not move around due to a baby tooth that was knocked out prematurely.
